{"id":2485,"date":"2019-05-19T14:46:06","date_gmt":"2019-05-19T14:46:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hr4free.web-romandie.ch\/?p=2485"},"modified":"2019-05-19T15:20:46","modified_gmt":"2019-05-19T15:20:46","slug":"konfliktmanagement-selbstbehauptung-bei-der-fuhrung-von-abmahnungs-und-fruhpensionierungsgesprachen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hr4free.com\/en\/Conflict-Management-Skills\/Applications-of-Assertiveness-Reprimand-Early-Retirement-Interview","title":{"rendered":"Conflict Management: Real-Life Applications of Assertiveness &#8211; Reprimand &#8211; Early Retirement Interview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we have seen in previous articles,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hr4free.com\/en\/Conflict-Management-Skills\/Introduction-and-Definition-of-Assertiveness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.hr4free.com\/en\/Conflict-Management-Skills\/Introduction-and-Definition-of-Assertiveness\">the practice of assertiveness (definition)<\/a>\u00a0consists in seeking a mutually satisfactory compromise in difficult situations and\/or conflicts<\/strong>\u2026The aim of this article is to illustrate the usefulness of practicing assertiveness through the concrete examples of the\u00a0<em>reprimand<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>early retirement interviews<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>APPLICATION N\u00b01: THE REPRIMAND INTERVIEW<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>The reprimand interview is an unpleasant but sometimes necessary exercise.\u00a0<\/strong>It should be conducted when the employee has moved away from the line of goals dictated by organizational goals. Specifically, the act of reprimand should be performed in two different situations: 1) in case of\u00a0<u>faulty work<\/u>\u00a0 or 2) in the event of\u00a0<u>non-completion of the requested tasks<\/u>. In both situations, great importance would be given to\u00a0<em>feedback<\/em>\u00a0and how it is conveyed. During a reprimand interview, the following principles should be abided by, in addition to the use of an &#8220;assertive&#8221; attitude:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Maintain the person&#8217;s\u00a0<em>self-esteem<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Listen \/ respond with\u00a0<em>empathy<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Describe in details the\u00a0<em>fault<\/em>\u00a0\/\u00a0<em>bad habit<\/em>\u00a0\/\u00a0<em>poor performance<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Explain your own<em>\u00a0concerns<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Ask the employee about the\u00a0<em>reasons<\/em>\u00a0behind this behavior and listen carefully to what he\/she has to say<\/li>\n<li>Emphasize the importance of changing the situation and ask for\u00a0<em>relevant suggestions<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Discuss each idea and<em>\u00a0offer help<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Agree on and schedule\u00a0<em>follow-up actions<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In all cases, it is important to make a distinction between 1) the\u00a0<strong>facts<\/strong>\u00a0and 2) the\u00a0<strong>emotional and subjective aspects<\/strong>\u00a0of the relationship (perceptions, judgments, impressions, emotional distortions\u2026). The use of\u00a0<em>communication techniques<\/em>\u00a0such as the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hr4free.com\/PDF_Files\/Blog_EN_Management_assertiveness_DESC.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.hr4free.com\/PDF_Files\/Blog_EN_Management_assertiveness_DESC.pdf\"><strong>&#8220;DESC&#8221; method (diagram)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hr4free.com\/en\/Managerial-Communication-Techniques\/Definition-of-Active-Listening-Carl-Rogers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/hr4free.com\/en\/Managerial-Communication-Techniques\/Definition-of-Active-Listening-Carl-Rogers\"><strong>active listening (definition)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0can prove to be particularly fruitful.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>APPLICATION N\u00b02: THE EARLY RETIREMENT INTERVIEW<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>The retirement of an employee who has reached the\u00a0legal retirement age\u00a0is a simple act of management<\/strong>\u00a0that usually does not represent a real operational or relational issue. The employee may be disappointed or feel indifferent about the retirement. However, both the employer and the employee tend to do well out of it, and in most cases, the related interview\u00a0takes place without any particular difficulty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Early retirement, however, may occur at an\u00a0unsuitable time\u00a0and can therefore greatly destabilize either the employer or the employee.<\/strong>\u00a0In order to mitigate \u2013 if not eliminate \u2013 the negative impact of an early retirement announcement, the following &#8220;rules&#8221; should be complied with. Obviously, such an attitude will be heavily reliant on the practice of assertiveness:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>State the facts in a calm and concise manner (stating facts and mentioning the antecedents); separate the\u00a0<em>problem<\/em>\u00a0from the\u00a0<em>person<\/em>\u00a0(the real issue is not the\u00a0<em>person<\/em>, it\u2019s the\u00a0<em>situation<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Encourage the person to express what he\/she feels (to a certain extent)<\/li>\n<li>Do not give any advice, even if it makes you sad to announce the news<\/li>\n<li>Do not unnecessarily prolong the meeting, but say that you are available in case the employee needs any help in the\u00a0<em>practical implementation of the decision<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0<em>announcement to others<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is quite a sensitive issue.
